Appalachian State Basketball: Appalachian @ Furman 2/9/2012

I am expecting Furman to be favored here by 4 points. I have not seen much from Appalachian in the past three games that would make me believe they would be favored.

2/9/12

Furman is favored at home by five points over the Mountaineers. Of all the rematch games this year between Appalachian and its conference opponents, Appalachian has failed to win on the road. To date, Appalachian’s only road wins this season were Tennessee Tech and Samford, who avenged their loss to the Mountaineers in Boone last week. Elon and UNCG defended their home courts against the Mountaineers, and in both cases, Appalachian failed to cover the spread. I have missed five straight games in a row, while Appalachian is 1-4 in the same span. Everything points to picking Furman to cover being the correct call. This will be the first time this season that I will pick the opponent to cover against the Mountaineers when they are favored. The two games where I picked the opponent, the Mountaineers were favored in both games. As a fan, it is very tough to pick the opposing team, but you have to follow the trends.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian vs. Wofford 2/8/2012

In the last week, Wofford has played two games that were total opposites. Against Chattanooga on Saturday, The Terriers could only manage 39 points in a 12 point loss to Chattanooga. How did they respond on Monday Night? The blistered the nets for 73 points against fourth place Samford. The Terriers had two players score at least twenty points. Wofford moved to 4-10 in league play.

In the previous meeting, Appalachian played  what has become their typical game, a slow grind it out defensive game void of much offensive presence. Appalachian had to defend Wofford three different times in the closing seconds in order to win 59-58.

The race for the top 3 seeds continues as Furman notched a big win over second place Chattanooga on Monday Night. Wofford’s win over Samford also kept them from gaining ground on Chattanooga

Appalachian       12-1

Davidson              11-2

Chattanooga       11-3

Samford                 8-5

Elon                         8-6

Furman                  8-6

Appalachian, Davidson and Samford  have 7 games remaining in conference play while Chattanooga, Elon and Furman have 6 games remaining.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian @ Georgia Southern 2/4/2012 | Appalachian @ Charleston 2/6/2012 Postgame

This was the beginning of a rough stretch of 5 games in 10 days for the Lady Mountaineers, and it started on the road in a gym the Mountaineers had not won in several seasons. Earlier in the season, Appalachian beat the Georgia Southern Eagles in Boone, 64-45. With every team gunning for the Mountaineers, any game on the road was going to be especially tough.

Appalachian held a slight lead in the first frame of play leading 30-27. In the second half, Appalachian turned up the defensive pressure, limiting the Lady Eagles to only 19 points in the second half. Appalachian held Georgia Southern to only 32% shooting for the entire game and held on to a 57-46 win. Courtney Freeman led all scorers with 19 points while Kelsey Sharkey grabbed ten rebounds in only 16 minutes of play. Catherine Williams chipped in 13 rebounds and 6 points in 25 minutes of action.

The following Monday night, Appalachian faced a Charleston team that they handled easily in Boone earlier in the season. Charleston had just played one of their worst games of the season against Davidson, only scoring 23 points in the game. This is another games where the Lady Apps started off slowly, as the scored was tied at 21 at the half. Appalachian used another strong defensive performance in the second half and held Charleston to 20 second half points en route to a 50-41 win. Anna Freeman led the Mountaineers with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 8 steals.

Appalachian State Basketball: Appalachian @ Elon 2/6/2012

After a couple of disappointing finishes for the the Mountaineers, I was hoping that playing the team they beat last would cure the Apps. Once the line was posted, I started getting a bad feeling where this game was heading. Appalachian, after playing two horrendous games in a row, may have started into somewhat of a tailspin. This is something the handicappers have a hard time seeing, where I listen and watch every game as it happens. The fan in me also had a slight pull toward the Mountaineers. The line was posted at Appalachian +1.5. My pick wast the Mountaineers. Elon started strong and never looked back, sending Appalachian to it’s third consecutive loss. The Apps, who were once very reliable on covering spreads, had also lost three games in a row against the spread. My record, which was once 7-4 has now fallen two games below .500 at 8-10.
