APPALACHIAN STATE (14-3, 3-0) @ NO. 3 SOUTH CAROLINA (15-1, 0-0 SEC)

ASU Fr. LHP Jeffrey Springs (1-0, 3.75 ERA) vs. USC Fr. LHP Jordan Montgomery (0-0, 1.80)

Appalachian started the game off with a bang, literally. Will Callaway connected on a three run homerun and Tyler Tewell hit a solo shot, all in the first inning, as Appalachian jumped out to a 4-0 lead before all of the South Carolina fans found their seats. However, the Mountaineers could not manage another hit until the ninth inning, when Tyler Zupcic singled. Daniel Kassouf followed two batters later with a bomb that was just a few feet short of clearing the fence in deepest part of the ballpark. South Carolina’s center fielder made an excellent catch against the fence and doubled up Zupcic who was running on contact. Appalachian lost 6-4.

The story of the game was the seven consecutive innings the Mountaineers went without a baserunner. On top of that, the 10 walks the Mountaineers surrendered and the 3 costly errors. Chad Farmer suffered the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season. The Mountaineers host The Citadel this weekend for a three game series in Boone.
