Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian @ Davidson 2/18/2012 Postgame & Appalachian vs. Furman 2/20/2012 Pregame

Appalachian suffered it’s most detrimental loss on the season on Saturday. The Apps shot 33% from the field for the game, and only attempted eight free throws. The Mountaineers shot 24 times more than the Wildcats and were called for 19 fouls to only eight for Davidson. Maryah Sydnor notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Chakeitha Weldon scored 6 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and added 4 steals in the losing effort.

Davidson now sits in the catbird seat by tying Appalachian with a 15-2 record in the SoCon North, but Davidson currently holds the tiebreaker with the season sweep over the Mountaineers. Both teams face Samford and Chattanooga on the road in the season’s final weekend, and both teams host games on Monday Night. Davidson other two losses on the season came to teams they have to play a second time, Wofford and Samford.

SoCon Standings

Davidson        15-2        Wofford, @ Chattanooga, @ Samford

App State        15-2        Furman, @Samford, @Chattanooga

Chattanooga     14-3     @Samford, Davidson, Appalachian

Samford         11-5        @WCU, Chattanooga, Appalachian, Davidson

In order for Appalachian to win the 1 seed for the tournament, they must finish a game in front of Davidson. Both Appalachian and Davidson are guaranteed to finish in the top 3 of the conference. Chattanooga still has the opportunity to win the championship, or finish fourth, and could create a three way tie if they were to win out. At this point, working out a three way tiebreaker has endless possibilities with each team in the top 4 playing each other at least twice.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian vs. Elon 2/13/2012 Postgame & Appalachian @ Davidson 2/18/2012 Pregame

Appalachian darted out to a 13-0 lead to start the game and never looked back in a 84-68 win over Elon on Monday evening. Elon did not score until well past the first media timeout (first dead ball after the 16:00 minute mark) and could not catch up with the Mountaineers, who won their tenth straight game. Appalachian’s Maryah Sydnor was one point short of matching her career high in points as she finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Anna Freeman scored 13 points with 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and 4 blocks.

The best teams in the SoCon continued to win with a minor upset in Greenville, SC. Western Carolina led by as many as 14 points before Furman stormed back to force overtime. Western Carolina prevailed in the extra session. Second place Davidson travelled to last place UNCG on Tuesday and squeaked out a nine point win over the Spartans. Davidson led by 18 at the half, but only managed twenty points in the second frame.

SoCon standings are basically unchanged with a huge game going down on Saturday afternoon in Davidson . Appalachian hopes to get revenge for their only conference loss on the season when they visit the Wildcats. It is an absolutely big game for both teams. Factoring in the loss Appalachian suffered at the hands of Davidson in Januaray, the standings basically say that the regular season title could be decided with this result. Appalachian leads Davidson by one game in the standings, and Chattanooga by two games. If Appalachian wins, it will go up by two games over the second place team, with only three games to play. However, if Davidson wins, they tie Appalachian in the standings and own the tiebreaker with two wins over the Mountaineers. All in all, Appalachian controls its own destiny with a win, and would need help  to win the regular season title if they were to lose.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian State vs. Elon 2/13/2012

02/13/2012

Appalachin cruised to a nineteen point victory over the UNC-Greensboro on Saturday afternoon in front of 952 fans at the Holmes Convocation Center. The win gave Appalachian its third twenty win season in as many years. Nothing else really changed around the conference as teams who were expected to win did which is keeping the conference race very tight with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The top six teams have separated themselves from the rest of the pack, and Appalachian’s schedule down the stretch is as tough as it gets. Appalachian hosts sixth place Elon tonight, with road games at third place Chattanooga, second place Davidson and fourth place Samford on the horizon.Sandwiched between those games is a home game against fifth place Furman. So, yes you read that correctly. Appalachian will face teams second through sixth place in the SoCon in the next five games. A top three seed in the SoCon tournament seems to be a lock with 4.5 games separating Appalchian and Samford.

Appalachin went on the road and defeated Elon five weeks ago, 72-58. The Mountaineers had a twenty four point lead on three occasions in the game before Elon mounted a second half comeback. Elon pulled with five points early in the second half, but the Mountaineers put the Phoenix away with a late run. With a win tonight, Appalachian guarantees itself a top three seed in the SoCon tournament.

How did they respond on Monday Night? The blistered the nets for 73 points against fourth place Samford. The Terriers had two players score at least twenty points. The race for the top 3 seeds continues as Furman notched a big win over second place Chattanooga on Monday Night. Wofford’s win over Samford also kept them from gaining ground on Chattanooga

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian @ Georgia Southern 2/4/2012 | Appalachian @ Charleston 2/6/2012 Postgame

This was the beginning of a rough stretch of 5 games in 10 days for the Lady Mountaineers, and it started on the road in a gym the Mountaineers had not won in several seasons. Earlier in the season, Appalachian beat the Georgia Southern Eagles in Boone, 64-45. With every team gunning for the Mountaineers, any game on the road was going to be especially tough.

Appalachian held a slight lead in the first frame of play leading 30-27. In the second half, Appalachian turned up the defensive pressure, limiting the Lady Eagles to only 19 points in the second half. Appalachian held Georgia Southern to only 32% shooting for the entire game and held on to a 57-46 win. Courtney Freeman led all scorers with 19 points while Kelsey Sharkey grabbed ten rebounds in only 16 minutes of play. Catherine Williams chipped in 13 rebounds and 6 points in 25 minutes of action.

The following Monday night, Appalachian faced a Charleston team that they handled easily in Boone earlier in the season. Charleston had just played one of their worst games of the season against Davidson, only scoring 23 points in the game. This is another games where the Lady Apps started off slowly, as the scored was tied at 21 at the half. Appalachian used another strong defensive performance in the second half and held Charleston to 20 second half points en route to a 50-41 win. Anna Freeman led the Mountaineers with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 8 steals.

Appalachian State Basketball: Appalachian @ Georgia Southern 2/4/2012

The Lady Mountaineers travel to Georgia Southern that should favor the Apps on paper in all aspects of the game. The Eagles are 3-9 in conference play, good for tie for eight place while the Mountaineers remain in the top spot in the league with 10-1 record. In the past, the Mountaineers have had trouble winning in Statesboro. Last season, the game was moved up two hours early in anticipation of some inclement weather. The Mountaineers were driving the day of the game, so their schedule was rushed getting off the bus to play. This season, the Georgia Southern game is part of a long road trip that includes a game on Monday at College of Charlseton. Once the Mountaineers get home sometime early Tuesday morning, they will have travelled just shy of 800 miles and played two basketball games in four days.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: Appalachian vs. Western Carolina 1/30/2012

It was not a pretty game for the Mountaineers, but luckily, it was even uglier for the Catamounts. Appalachian struggled to a four point halftime lead, but turned up the defense and only allowed 14  points and 18% shooting to Western in the second half. For the game, it was the best defensive effort of the season, giving up only 39 points, which is less than a point per minute for the entire game. It was the fewest points allowed all season, besting the 41 points allowed to Gardner Webb in the season’s third game. It was the sixth time this season Appalachian failed to reach 60 points. The Mountaineers are 3-3 in those games. Appalachian is 13-0 when scoring 60 points or more.

Appalachian remains in first place in the Southern Conference after Monday’s full slate of games. Chattanooga, Davidson, Samford and Wofford all kept pace with the Mountaineers with wins on Monday. Davidson’s win over Furman was the only game that appeared to be a good matchup, before the Wildcats stomped the Paladins by 21 points. The biggest game this weekend is most likely Elon (6-6) hosting Furman (7-5). It is must win for both teams if they hope to grab a top 3 seed in the SoCon Women’s Tournament. Reminder, the importance of a top three seed in the tournament is being able to play one less game on the way to the championship.

STANDINGS

Appalachian 10-1

Chattanooga 10-2

Samford 8-4

Appalachian State Basketball: Appalachian @ Furman 1/28/12 & Appalachian vs. Western Carolina 1/30/2012 Pregame

Any thoughts that Appalachian might lose a game they shouldn’t after Anna Freeman’s injury were quelled on Saturday. Freeman suffered a nasty ankle injury against Samford on Monday, but she responded with a game high 22 points and chipped in eight rebounds as the Mountaineers dominated Furman 78-63. The 78 points was Appalachian’s highest total since scoring 81 against UNCG on January 9th. Appalachian maintains its half game lead in the SoCon women’s race over second place Chattanooga who also won on Saturday. Appalachian is now 9-1 in league play with ten conference games remaining. Davidson is one game back from Appalachian in third place, while Samford and Furman are tied for fourth at 7-4 in league play.

Next up is Western Carolina who is 2-9 in league play, sitting in a three way tie for ninth place, or last depending on how you look at it. Appalachian beat Western by 36 points back in December. Appalachian was led by three double digit scores in the win in Cullowhee as Courtney Freeman scored 18 points while Anna Freeman chipped in 12 points and freshman Katie Mallow scored 14.
