Volleyball adds transfer, releases schedule

Appalachian Volleyball announced a incoming transfer and released their 2012 schedule this week. Despite only nine home games on the schedule, the timing of the home games is especially exciting. Seven home games are on the weekend and feature conferennce opponents. Septemeber 29th features a 7pm start opposite of Appalachian’s home football game against Coastal Carolina. Appalachian finishes the last weekend in September against UNC-Greensboro on Septemeber 30th.

On October 6th, Appalachian will host Georgia Southern at 7pm which will come on the heels of the Homecoming football game against Elon. Appalachian hosts another weekend set on Friday October 19th against College of Charleston at 7pm and Saturday, October 20th against The Citadel at 7pm. The Saturday game follows Appalachian battling Wofford on the gridiron.

In November, Appalachian hosts Western Carolina on the only weeknight game on the conference slate at 7pm. Appalachian concludes the regular season with another weekend set against Samford and Chattanooga. The weekend includes a 7pm start on Saturday, November 10th and Sunday, November 11th at 2:30. Appalachian Football will host Furman on Saturday as part of Black Saturday.

In all, Appalachian will have three weekend home games with three on Saturday. The weekend of September 29th may interfere with football as the Coastal Carolina game could be the night game. The two other Saturday games will start right after the football games, which will most likely kickoff at 3:3opm.

The non-conference slate includes opponents from several BCS conferences. Seton Hall and Minnesota will participate in the James Madison Invitational. Houston and Missouri are included in the Lipscomb Invitational. The VCU Invitational includes Virginia and Georgetown. The Wake Forest Black & Gold Challenge includes the Demon Deacons, Toledo, and Campbell.

Matt Ginipro also announced the addition of Dalton Tolliver, 6’1″ middle blocker from University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Tolliver was the America East Rookie of the Year and was a second team All-America East honoree. Tolliver will join liberos Kim Adkins and Meghan Mahoney, Outside Hitters Jessica Keller and Emily Corrigan, Setter Paige Brown, sister of current player Lauren Brown, and Middle Blocker Hailey Kerr.

The 14th Annual GreatAppSt Countdown starts right now!!! :D
Yes, It’s that time again girls n’ boys, WOOOOT!!!

Fall weather, outdoor culinary delights, good spirits, ;-} and gatherings of friends young and old will soon be here.

I know that if you’re here reading this (again)you’re looking forward to football with as much enthusiasm and anticipation as I am.
14 Years and still going strong, I’d like to thank all the fans from many teams and different boards, who have joined in and expressed their enjoyment of the countdown over many years. Again, it has been and is still a great pleasure for me to do the countdown for Y’all.

Now on to the same ol’ yearly intro!!!!

The G.A.S. Countdown is NOT just the often used, automatic backwards clock ticker (when I started this there were no others of any kind that I could find and trust me I looked). This countdown IS a work of passion for the enjoyment of others and myself. The G.A.S. countdown IS the often IMITATED but never duplicated ORIGINAL (like a Coney Island hot dog) build up to a new season of thrills, chills, and spills. Fun for ALL and all are welcomed along for the (like all Italian pizzeria’s claim), Worlds Best Countdown!

THE RULES
1.) This is the G.A.S. Countdown.

2.) Only full 24 hr Calendar days
left before 12:01am of gameday are counted. The day before gameday is counted at Zero, as are only hours are left then.

4.) Barring catastophic events the day will be posted this is my pledge. Please be patient it may be later in the evening before I have a chance to post.

ENJOY!!

ERIC aka G.A.S.

The bats were cold for Appalachian as they only managed four hits against LSU starter Kevin Gausman, who pitched 7 innings and added seven strikeouts. Preston Troutman, Will Callaway(.357), Jeremy Dowdy and Tyler Zupcic collected the hits for the Mountaineers.

Saturday Starters:

ASU Sr. RHP Ryan Arrowood (0-0, 4.50) vs LSU So. RHP Ryan Eades (1-0, 0.00)

The Mountaineers only managed five hits and one run, but that was all the help that Ryan Arrowood needed in a massive upset 1-0 over Louisiana State. Arrowood pitched seven innings, struck out 10 batters and only gave up two hits and one walk. At one point in the game, Arrowood retired 16 consecutive batters and twenty of twenty one.

Daniel Kassouf gave Appalachian all the offense they needed with a 4th inning homerun, his second of the season. Jeremy Dowdy added two hits to give him three hits for the series.

Appalachian State Basketball: Appalachian @ The Citadel Postgame & Updated SoCon North Standings

It is really tough to describe the emotion any Appalachian basketball fan must have after learning about the loss to The Citadel last night. The Bulldogs won for the sixth time last night. It was their third conference win of the season and only fourth win over a Division I team. The Mountaineers shot themselves in the foot last night. Take away Nathan Healy, who had 19 points and hit three of his six three point attempts, and the Mountaineers were 0-19 from behind the arc. The Mountaineers were 17-34 from two point range, but continued to settle for the lower percentage shots. In contrast, The Citadel only shot the ball thirty eight times from the field, but benefited from shooting 21-28 from the free throw line. Appalachian only attempted eleven free throws. The Citadel was one of the worst rebounding teams in the conference but still managed to dominate the Mountaineers on the boards, 36-26. Andre Williamson  managed ten points and fourteen of the teams twenty six rebounds coming off the bench.

Appalachian can still tie for second in the North, but it will do them no good. In the event of a three way tie, Samford would win it and leave Appalachian in the third spot, which would mean playing The Citadel again in the first round. Appalachian could win on Saturday and guarantee no worse than fourth in the North. A loss to Western Carolina would put the Mountaineers in a very precarious situation. If Western can beat Samford tonight, coupled, with beating Appalachian on Saturday, Western would vault to fourth place, dropping Appalachian to fifth place by themselves. If Western and Appalachian were to tie at 7-11, the tiebreaker would go to the fourth and final SoCon tiebreaking procedure, which is the higher ratings published by RPIratings.com. As of February 19th, Appalachian holds that tiebreaker by a very slim margin, but that could change. The final comparison will basically be between The Citadel and Samford, the teams final uncommon opponents.

There is a school that will receive the 2 seed bye in the tournament, but they will not deserve it, no matter who they are. Elon spent most of the first half  of the conference season in first place but has since floundered, losing four in a row. Appalachian has not won three games in a row all season long, which eventually led to their demise. Samford sits in the best position at 8-8, but has two road games remaining.

Appalachian State Women’s Basketball: 2/22/12 Updated SoCon Standings

Samford snagged a huge home win over third place Chattanooga that keeps them alive for bye contention going into the conference tournament. From everything that I can see, this officially locks Appalachian and Davidson into the top two seeds in the tournament. Chattanooga can create a two way tie with either Davidson or Appalachian, or a three way tie with both teams, but would lose the tiebreaker in every scenario. Besides the loss the Mocs suffered on the court, the also lost ground in a potential tiebreaker scenario as well. Furman scored a nineteen point win on the road over Wofford which now gives them a 9-9 record in conference play, which is one game behind fifth place Elon, who is 10-8. Furman plays two winnable games as do the Phoenix, but Western Carolina is coming on strong late in the season and could give the Phoenix some trouble. Samford is hoping to tie Chattanooga in the standings and have Furman vault to fifth place in conference to grab the third seed.

Appalachian State Basketball: 2/21/2012 Updated SoCon North Standings

The only game in the Southern Conference on Tuesday night was Wofford visiting UNC-Greensboro. Wofford is the one team I cannot figure out. After getting smacked around by Charleston Southern on the road in the BracketBusters, they easily take care of the Spartans in the Greensboro Coliseum, defeating them 68-56. After winning its previous three road games, UNCG lost at Georgia Southern this past Saturday, and has now lost by 12 at home after defeating Charleston by fifteen points in its previous home game. Appalachian visits The Citadel tomorrow in the only Wednesday SoCon game.
